How to Align and Indent Text in the Content Editor

Four alignment buttons and two indent buttons sit together on the toolbar, with the two picture-wrap buttons, Wrap Text, Image Left and Wrap Text, Image Right, between them (see Place an Image Beside Text in the Content Editor).

Align Left, Align Center, Align Right and Full Justify, then the two Wrap Text buttons, then Indent and Outdent

Alignment

  • Align Left, which is the usual setting for body text and the easiest to read.
  • Align Center, which suits a heading or a single line.
  • Align Right.
  • Full Justify, which stretches each line out to both margins.

Indent

Indent moves the content right by one level and Outdent brings it back. Inside a list the same two buttons move an item in or out a level, which is how you nest one list inside another.

The part that catches people

Align Left, Align Center and Align Right move a picture, a table or an inserted button as well as text; Full Justify works on text only. Click the thing in the writing box first so it is selected, then align it. Pressing an align button with nothing selected leaves it exactly where it was. Clicking a picture a second time deselects it.
