How to Exclude Do Not Solicit Constituents from Mailing Lists

The Do Not Solicit setting prevents constituents from receiving fundraising solicitations. Here is how to ensure your mailing lists respect this preference.

What Is Do Not Solicit?

Do Not Solicit is a constituent preference that indicates they do not wish to receive fundraising appeals or solicitation communications. This is different from Do Not Email, which blocks all emails.

Where Do Not Solicit Is Set

The setting is found on each constituent's record:

  1. Open the constituent record
  2. Go to the Contact Info tab
  3. Look for the Do Not Solicit toggle switch
  4. When ON, the constituent should not receive solicitations

Filtering Out Do Not Solicit Constituents from Mailing Lists

When creating email lists in the Mail Room:

  1. Go to Communication > Mail Room
  2. Create or edit your mailing list
  3. Look for the Exclude Do Not Solicit filter option
  4. Enable this filter to automatically exclude constituents with Do Not Solicit enabled
  5. This ensures your solicitation emails don't go to those who opted out

Mail Room Settings

To configure default behavior for all lists:

  1. Go to Communication > Mail Room > Manage Mailing Lists
  2. Look for list settings or preferences
  3. Enable automatic Do Not Solicit exclusion for new lists

Related Communication Preferences

In addition to Do Not Solicit, constituents may have other preferences:

  • Do Not Email: Blocks all email communication
  • Do Not Call: Indicates no phone calls wanted
  • Do Not Text: Blocks text/SMS messages

Checking Before Sending

Before sending fundraising communications:

  1. Review your mailing list for Do Not Solicit constituents
  2. Use filters to exclude them
  3. Verify the final recipient count after applying filters

  • Maintain trust: Ignoring preferences damages relationships
  • Legal compliance: Some jurisdictions have rules about solicitation consent

Viewing a Report of Do Not Solicit Constituents

To see who has this flag enabled:

  1. Go to Constituents
  2. Use the filter to show only Do Not Solicit = Yes
  3. Export the list if needed for review
